Ederson started to play football on the streets of São Paulo. He joined the RS Futebol, a Brazilian second tier club, at the age of 16. A year later, he joined Juventude, which was handled by Ricardo Gomes during that time. Ederson developed his skills at Juventude. His great performances with the team got him a call-up from the Brazil under-17 team. He helped the team win the FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Finland in 2003.

Just like the majority of Brazilian football players, Europe was Ederson’s dream destination. He joined the French club OGC Nice in January 2005 (as a loan) after then-Nice manager Gernot Rohr approached him. He played his debut game on 5 February 2005 against Metz. He scored his first goal, which was also a winner for Nice, against Monaco.

Ederson’s best season was his last at Nice, with 36 starts in his 36 appearances. He was also able to score 7 goals. But in January 2008, Nice and Ederson both agreed on a transfer agreement with Olympique Lyonnais for €14 million and another million worth of incentives for Nice. In June 2008, he officially joined Lyon together with Hugo Lloris, a teammate from Nice. He was assigned the number 7, since he was considered as a perfect replacement for Juninho.
